Day 1 — Four Temples, Centuries of History
- 08.00 AM — Hotel pickup from Yogyakarta. Drive east toward the temple corridor of Sleman.
- Sambisari Temple — Begin with a fascinating visit to Sambisari Temple — a hidden gem discovered by a farmer in 1966, buried under volcanic ash from a massive Merapi eruption. Descend below ground level into this beautifully restored 8th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, and marvel at its intricate reliefs and mysterious underground setting.
- Prambanan Temple — Continue to the crown jewel of the day — Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 9th century as a dedication to the Trimurti gods — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — this towering complex of over 200 temples is one of Southeast Asia’s most breathtaking archaeological wonders.
- Sewu Temple — Just steps from Prambanan lies the magnificent Sewu Temple — an 8th-century Mahayana Buddhist complex surrounded by hundreds of intricately carved stupas. Steeped in legend, including the famous tale of Roro Jonggrang, Sewu is a fascinating contrast to the Hindu temples nearby.
- Plaosan Temple — End the day at the deeply moving Plaosan Temple — a Buddhist complex built in the 9th century by a Hindu king as a symbol of love for his Buddhist queen. A timeless monument to interfaith love, tolerance, and harmony that still resonates today.
